What Baghdad in My Shadow Is About
In London, Iraqis in exile gather at a café called Abu Nawas: Amal the architect, Taufiq the poet and Muhannad, who works in computing. All three hoped to find here the freedom they could not find at home. But London is not a sealed space either; the pressure they left behind follows them inside the same community. Muhannad becomes a target because he is gay, and Amal because of the life she leads as a woman. The film does not tell exile as a story of liberation; it asks what it is that gets carried along. Haitham Abdel-Razzaq and Zahraa Ghandour appear in Samir Jamal Al Din’s hundred and five minute film, completed in 2019.
