What Balance Is About
Seven minutes of stop-motion. Five identical men live on a platform suspended in empty space; it tilts at the slightest imbalance, so every step any of them takes has to account for the others' weight. Then they haul up a box on a fishing line, and the wish to own it moves all of them at once. The Lauenstein brothers show the arithmetic of greed without a word of dialogue. It won the Oscar for animated short. The final image stays with you longer than most features manage.
