What Balkan Express Is About
Branko Baletić's film is set in occupied Yugoslavia at the beginning of the Second World War. A group of swindlers and thieves pass themselves off as musicians to make a living and call themselves the Balkan Express. Their aim is not politics but eating; whoever pays is whoever they play for. The film keeps this going as comedy for a long time, and then the reality of the occupation comes up onto the table and the group has to take a side. Its strength is in that turn, since heroism here is not a moment of decision but something that happens to people who cannot get out of the way. It is among the better loved Yugoslav films, with Dragan Nikolić at the centre of the cast.
