What Bamboo Doll of Echizen Is About
Kisuke, a young bamboo craftsman, marries Tomoe, who was once involved with his late father. She worked for money in her earlier life, and that past is carried into the marriage. The film gives the distance between them not through conversation but through work and silence, and the craft of bamboo sets the account’s own rhythm. It does not define the woman by her past nor make the man a rescuer. The father’s shadow stands throughout in the house and makes the decision harder for both of them. It comes from the quiet, inward vein of Japanese cinema of 1963. Ayako Wakao plays the lead in Kozaburo Yoshimura’s hundred and three minute Japanese film, completed in 1963.
