What Salaam Bombay! Is About
Krishna's mother leaves him at a circus and tells him he can come home once he has the five hundred rupees to replace the bicycle he wrecked. The circus moves on without him and he ends up in Bombay, carrying tea for a living, falling in with others on the street. The five hundred rupees never accumulate. Mira Nair's first feature; most of the cast were genuinely street children, prepared through workshops. It took the Caméra d'Or at Cannes and an Oscar nomination for foreign film. Child prostitution, drugs and violence against children are all in it.
