Love in Another Language

İlksen Başarır's 2009 film follows the relationship between Onur, deaf since birth, and Zeynep, who enters his life. Onur works in a library and can speak, but has chosen silence because of the pitying looks around him; his father left home when he was seven and Onur blames himself for it. The film frames communication not as a matter of disability but as everyone being shut inside a language of their own. Mert Fırat's performance presents the character's silence as a choice rather than a deficit, which departs from the usual screen representation of deaf characters. The distance between him and Saadet Işıl Aksoy builds the tension. The weakness is a second half in which the romance settles into over-familiar patterns. Who it's for: viewers who like Turkish independent cinema and relationship films built on communication. Who it's not for: anyone sensitive to how disability is represented, or bothered by how predictable the plot becomes.
