Battle for Terra

A peaceful flying species lives on a planet called Terra, and when an enormous ship appears in the sky nobody understands what it is. The people aboard are humans who have lost Earth and then their colonies and are looking for somewhere to live. The difficulty is that Terra's atmosphere is poisonous to them and terraforming will kill the inhabitants. Aristomenis Tsirbas works in the shape of children's animation while making humans the invading party outright, and vindicates nobody entirely. The relationship between young Mala and Jim, an injured pilot, holds the centre. The budget was small and it shows in places, though the design idea is strong. The ending is unexpectedly heavy for a children's film. Who it is for: viewers who like science fiction animation and colonial allegory. Who it is not for: anyone expecting technical polish, since this was made with limited means.
