What Bear Cub Is About
Pedro is a dentist in Madrid with a crowded social life and a household arranged entirely to suit himself. His sister, about to travel, leaves her nine-year-old son Bernardo with him for a couple of weeks. When the couple of weeks stretches out and the arrangement starts looking permanent, Pedro's life has to be rebuilt from the ground up. There is also something nobody knows about: Pedro's own health. Miguel Albaladejo tells the story of a gay man suddenly becoming a parent without falling into a single cliché. He neither holds his characters up as models nor puts them on the defensive; their faults are all in plain view. It was among the first Spanish films to treat the subject this comfortably. The bond between the man and the boy builds slowly and never feels pushed.
