What Beat the Drum Is About
Musa is orphaned when his mother and father die in his village in KwaZulu Natal, and he sets off for Johannesburg to help his grandmother, carrying the one thing his father left him, a drum. Looking for work and for his uncle in the city, he meets a girl who lives by picking pockets; he does not take up her trade, but from her he learns the name of the illness that took his parents and how it spreads. The illness is AIDS, and the film tells the damage the epidemic did in South Africa through the eyes of a child; Musa ends up making it his business to carry what he learned back home. David Hickson’s hundred and fourteen minute South African American production screened at the Mill Valley Film Festival in 2003 and won some thirty festival awards.
