What The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo Is About
Early 1980s, on the edge of a mining town in the northern Chilean desert. A deadly illness nobody has a name for is spreading among the miners, and the story going around town is that it passes between two men who fall in love and look at each other. The people being blamed are the queer cabaret troupe that young Lidia calls her family, and she sets out to find whether the story is true. Diego Céspedes's first feature takes the fear and the branding of the epidemic's earliest years and plays them in the key of a western: the town, the outcasts, the reckoning. It won the top prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2025 and was sent forward as Chile's Oscar submission.
