What Kokuho Is About
Nagasaki, 1964. When his yakuza father is killed, fourteen year old Kikuo is taken in by a famous kabuki actor and begins learning the art alongside Shunsuke, the man's own son. Over decades the two grow up as brothers and rivals, and between scandal, triumph, friendship and betrayal one of them reaches the summit of the form. The title comes from the official designation given in Japan to masters of the traditional arts, meaning national treasure. Male kabuki actors performing women's roles sit at the centre. It runs close to three hours.
