What Villain Is About

Yuichi is a lonely construction labourer in Kyushu who meets women through telephone dating services. One night one of them, an insurance saleswoman named Yoshino, is found dead on a mountain road. Yuichi runs, and on the way meets Mitsuyo, a woman he knows from an online site, who chooses to run with him. From there the film asks, one by one, who the villain actually is: the killer, the rich boy who humiliated the victim, the father who never knew his own daughter. Sang-il Lee directs, adapting Shuichi Yoshida's novel, with Satoshi Tsumabuki as Yuichi and Eri Fukatsu as Mitsuyo. Two hours and nineteen minutes. Fukatsu was named best actress at the Japan Academy Prize for the part.
