Maspalomas

Vicente is seventy six and lives in Maspalomas. He has separated from the person he was with for a long time. He runs his life as he likes: lying in the sun, going out at night, answering to nobody. He has an accident. He can no longer live alone and has to return to San Sebastián. His daughter, whom he left years ago, is there. He moves into a care home. The home is another world; nobody there knows who he is, and Vicente starts hiding himself again. What he lived openly for a lifetime he now conceals. Jose Mari Goenaga and Aitor Arregi direct. José Ramón Soroiz plays Vicente; Nagore Aranburu is in the cast. It is a Spanish production. It was shown at the San Sebastián Film Festival on 21 September 2025 and opened in Spain on 26 September. It competed for the Golden Shell at the festival; José Ramón Soroiz won the Silver Shell for best leading performance and the Sebastiane award. Soroiz was named best actor for the same part at the 2026 Goya awards. The matter it treats is visibility in old age; the order of care protects a person and shuts him back in at the same time. The narrative does not tie the relation with his daughter to an easy reconciliation. Its first part and its second are like two different films; the register drops deliberately. Its limit is pace; the second half is heavy and there is little event. Who it is for: viewers who like Spanish and Basque cinema and stories about growing old. Who it is not for: the subject is heavy, the register bleak, and the ending brings no relief.
