What Beauties of the Night Is About
What became of the vedettes who filled Mexico's cabaret stages in the seventies and eighties? Maria Jose Cuevas followed five of them over eight years: Olga Breeskin, Lyn May, Rossy Mendoza, Wanda Seux and Princesa Yamal. The documentary moves between old footage and the present without ever making any of them ridiculous, recording age not as a story of decline but as a life that is still going on. It premiered at Toronto in 2016, won three prizes at Morelia including best documentary, and was nominated for best film, best documentary and best first film at the 2017 Ariel Awards.
