What The Spirit of '45 Is About
Ken Loach's documentary is about the order built in Britain immediately after the Second World War. The Labour government elected in 1945, in a period combining scarcity with post-war optimism, built the welfare state, took the mines and the railways into public ownership and started the national health service. The second half jumps to 1979 and describes how successive governments took those institutions back apart. Loach combines archive footage with the accounts of people who lived through it. This is not a neutral history but openly an argument, and the objections of those who disagree with its case are not given room. It does not hide what it is trying to do.
