April 1945, in the Danish village of Ryslinge. The boarding school Jakob runs is requisitioned as a camp for German refugees, and his family is caught between the resistance their town stands with and the people now standing at their gate. Anders Walter’s film, drawn from real events, refuses the easy shape of a rescue story. In the months before liberation nearly a quarter of a million German civilians, most of them women, the elderly and children, were pushed into Denmark. In March 1945 the Danish Association of Doctors resolved that they would not be treated, and more than thirteen thousand died that year, around seven thousand of them under five.
