What Before the Rain Is About
The film is in three parts, fastened together into a ring whose end runs into its beginning. In Macedonia, a young monk who has taken a vow of silence hides an Albanian girl accused of killing someone from his own community. In London, a pregnant picture editor meets her estranged husband at a restaurant to talk. Then a war photographer goes home. Milcho Manchevski builds the circularity of violence into the shape of the narrative itself: time does not advance, it closes over itself. Rade Šerbedžija and Katrin Cartlidge star. Made while the Balkan wars were going on, and still shattering.
