What Behold a Pale Horse Is About
The Spanish Civil War is over. Manuel Artiguez fought on the republican side, crossed into France, and has stayed there twenty years. Then word comes that his mother is dying. He wants to go to his town. But someone on the other side of the border has been waiting years for exactly this: Lieutenant Viñolas. Viñolas sets the mother's hospital as a trap and waits for Artiguez to come. In between are a boy from the village and a priest, and each has to decide whom to tell what he knows. Fred Zinnemann directs; a hundred and eighteen minutes, with Gregory Peck as Artiguez, Anthony Quinn as Viñolas and Omar Sharif as the priest. It is adapted from Emeric Pressburger's novel. Franco's government objected to it, and the producing studio's films were kept out of Spain for a long stretch afterwards.
