What Berlin-Alexanderplatz: The Story of Franz Biberkopf Is About
Franz Biberkopf comes out after four years in prison and tries to build a decent life, and fails. The Berlin underworld pulls him in, and the murder of the woman he lives with changes everything for good. Phil Jutzi adapted the film from Alfred Döblin’s 1929 novel, with Döblin himself among the writers; having to bring five hundred pages under ninety minutes, it tells a core rather than a novel. Most of it was shot in the real streets of Berlin around Alexanderplatz, which makes it a record of the city at the very start of the thirties as well. Heinrich George plays Biberkopf and carries both the man’s changeability and the bursts of joy that arrive in him for no reason. It was made some fifty years before Fassbinder’s series from the same novel.
