In the poor Berlin district of Wedding, Mother Krause lives in one flat of a tenement with her daughter Erna and her son Paul, sharing it with a lodger, his fiancée Friede and Friede’s child. The old woman earns a few coins delivering newspapers and her son spends that money on drink; unable to settle what she owes, she is accused of theft and has to pawn the last valuable thing she has. Erna meets a young man close to the workers’ movement and tries to earn what her mother needs another way. Phil Jutzi’s hundred and thirty three minute silent film, produced by the Prometheus company and built on the world Heinrich Zille had drawn, is among the best known examples of proletarian cinema: a way out opens for the young generation while the older one goes under.
