Paul von Hindenburg What Berlin: Symphony of a Great City Is About
There is no story and there are no characters: this silent film from 1927, sixty-nine minutes long, builds a single day in Berlin out of images, from the first train of the morning to the end of the night. Factories, trams, shop windows, the lunch break, crowds, nightlife. Ruttmann thought of the editing as a piece of music; rhythm, repetition and acceleration take the place of narrative. One of the known works in what is called the city symphony form. It is also a record of how interwar Berlin looked, worked and dressed.
