What Bet on Revenge Is About
A Hungarian aristocrat has lost almost everything to the Austrian officer who killed his father, and all that is left in his stable is a bad-tempered mare. Her name is Kincsem, and nobody can beat her. Revenge and a stubborn courtship with his enemy's daughter run side by side down the same track. The horse was real. Kincsem won all fifty-four of her races before retiring in 1879 and became a celebrity across Europe. Gábor Herendi stages her story as a lavish Austro-Hungarian pageant that became the most expensive Hungarian production made to that point.
