What Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above Is About
The documentary films Taiwan entirely from the air: mountains, rivers, coastline and fields begin as a display of beauty, and then the same camera starts tracking mines, factory outflows and unplanned building. Chi Po-lin sets up that contrast without inflating anything, and the image itself becomes the argument. It drew the largest audience any documentary has had in Taiwan and won best documentary at the Golden Horse Awards in 2013. The director died in a helicopter crash in 2017 while shooting the sequel; his assistant and the pilot were killed with him.
