Beyond the Dream

Kiwi Chow's 2020 Hong Kong film follows Lok, in treatment for schizophrenia. He takes his medication regularly and is trying to build an ordinary life; he meets a woman named Yan and the relationship moves fast. But whether Yan actually exists is uncertain. The film does not use that uncertainty as a twist; it reveals it early and moves the real question elsewhere. When Lok cannot tell what is real, should the relationship continue, and who is to tell him. The narrative also shows how mental health services operate; the question of the boundary between counsellor and patient forms a second line. Terrance Lau leads. The tone approaches melodrama without turning the diagnosis into a metaphor. Who it's for: those who like contemporary Hong Kong cinema and dramas about mental health. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a stable ground of reality; the film deliberately unsettles it.
