What Bheed Is About

A nationwide lockdown is declared across India, transport stops and state borders are sealed, and thousands of migrant workers set out on foot for home with no food, no water and no way to travel. At one border post the assignment given to police officer Surya Kumar Singh Tikas is simple, hold the crowd back, but as the crowd grows the situation stops being a matter of public order. Anubhav Sinha’s hundred and twelve minute film is equally direct about the caste divisions running through the people stranded there: poverty has pushed everyone onto the same road, yet not everyone is treated the same way. Shot entirely in black and white, it opened on 24 March 2023 with Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Kapur and Bhumi Pednekar.
