A maths teacher posted to a new school becomes obsessed with the relationships of the couples around him. He cannot manage his own and tries to correct everyone else's. The film slides its comedy towards discomfort; the narrative never marks the point where his curiosity becomes surveillance, the audience notices it. There is a shift of genre after the midpoint, which we will not open up here. Nanni Moretti wrote, directed and stars. It is among the best known works of his generation in Italian cinema. Who it's for: those who like uncomfortable Italian comedy and Moretti's manner. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a light romantic comedy; the film goes somewhere else deliberately.
