A famous adult film performer of the seventies, deep into addiction, turns up around a mass killing in Los Angeles. Rather than settle on one truth, James Cox assembles the events from contradictory statements, showing the same night twice in two different versions. The structure makes the film both interesting and exhausting, because there is nobody to trust and no intention of resolving that. Val Kilmer makes no effort to render the character appealing. Since it is built on a real case, it withholds the satisfaction of a detective story: the case itself was largely never closed.
