What Bitter Flowers Is About
Lina, in her mid-thirties, borrows money and leaves her husband and son in Liaoning in north-east China for Paris, meaning to work a few hard seasons, save, and come back to start something of her own. On the streets of Belleville nothing goes the way she planned and she is pushed into work she never imagined doing. When her sister-in-law turns up at the door, the lies she has been telling home start stacking on top of each other. Olivier Meys made his first feature about a real and growing pattern: Chinese women drawn to Europe on promises of easy earnings. It premiered at the Busan festival in 2017.
