What Champion Is About
In the mid-nineties, with Turkey squeezed economically and politically, a horse that always came from the back to win and the jockey who rode him became a story the whole country shared. The races of Bold Pilot and Halis Karatas pulled people who had never cared about racing into the stands, because they saw themselves in the horse at the back. What the film is mainly about is the love that began in that setting, between Halis Karatas and Begum Atman. A melodrama drawn from real people; the racing is well shot, but the couple is at the centre, not the horse.
