What Black Belt Is About
Japan, 1932. With militarism rising after the Manchurian occupation, three karateka are studying under their ageing master at a small dojo in the woods of Kyushu. The military police arrive to requisition the dojo as a base. When the master dies it is also unsettled who should hold the black belt, and the three students take three different roads: one works with the army, one resists, one refuses to strike at all. Shunichi Nagasaki shot the fights without wires or effects; the leads, Tatsuya Naka and Akihito Yagi, are genuine karate masters. Which is why the movement is not showy but short and hard.
