What Black Lizard Is About
Sanae, the daughter of the jeweller Shobei Iwase, is kidnapped. The one behind it is a jewel thief known as the Black Lizard. She sets the trap by first introducing Sanae to a young man. The detective Akechi Kogoro takes the case. A chase begins between the two of them, and along the way Akechi falls under her charm. The story comes from a novel by Edogawa Rampo. Yukio Mishima turned it into a play, and the film is adapted from that play. Kaneto Shindo worked on the screenplay as well. Machiko Kyō and Minoru Ōki appear in Umetsugu Inoue’s Japanese film of 1962, a hundred and one minutes long.
