What The Third Shadow Warrior Is About
A peasant named Kyonosuke, living in the mountains of Hida, wants only one thing: to be a samurai. That wish comes true when he is chosen as one of the three doubles of Lord Yasutaka. He goes through months of hard training; his work is to stand in the lord’s place when needed. When the lord and the other two doubles are killed in battle, his turn comes. Kyonosuke must now carry not his own name but another man’s. The film tells this not as a rise but as an erasure. That getting what you wanted can take you away from yourself stands at the centre of the account. Raizō Ichikawa takes the lead in Umetsugu Inoue’s hundred and four minute Japanese film, completed in 1963.
