What Black Pit of Dr. M Is About
Two doctors make a pact: whichever dies first will come back, if it is possible, and tell the other what lies after death and how it might be glimpsed while still alive. When Aldama dies, Mazali does not get what he was waiting for. Instead the dead man's spirit begins to work on him from the other side, drawing his daughter Patricia to the asylum Mazali runs. Fernando Méndez's film is counted among the classics of Mexican gothic. Almost all of it takes place in an old asylum in the countryside, and the graveyard, the fog and the heavy stonework build its whole atmosphere. The photography is unusually careful for its period.
