What The Legend of Hell House Is About

Richard Matheson adapted his own 1971 novel, and John Hough shot it in the chilled corridors of an English house the film insists is the most haunted in the world. A physicist, his wife and two mediums are sealed inside to settle whether anything survives death. The cleverest move is letting the two psychics, played by Pamela Franklin and Roddy McDowall, read identical phenomena in incompatible ways, so their argument becomes the horror. The score came from Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson, the pair behind the electronic realisation of the Doctor Who theme, and the result sounds less like music than like the building humming to itself. Who it is for: viewers who want dread built from sound and stubborn disagreement. Who it is not for: anyone waiting on jump scares.
