In the years before the Second World War, in a small Soviet town by the sea, a very young woman named Vera falls in love with an older officer who has come from elsewhere. She leaves her home and her family to go with him and spends her years in the garrisons where he serves, in quarters that all look alike. She keeps the bond through the hardships of army life and through the war years, but what she expects in return is never asked. The film tells of loyalty and sacrifice across a whole woman’s life, and also shows how much of that life was left to her. In Stanislav Govorukhin’s hundred and fourteen minute Russian film, Svetlana Khodchenkova plays Vera, with Aleksandr Baluev, Inna Churikova and Irina Kupchenko in the cast. It was completed in 2003.
