What Blind Mountain Is About

Bai Xuemei, just out of university and looking for work, is tricked, drugged and sold as a wife to a household in a remote mountain village. She is raped and beaten, and every attempt to get out fails because of the village rather than any one person in it: nobody is her enemy, nobody helps her, and that is precisely what makes the film so hard to sit through. Li Yang got it into Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2007 only after around twenty required cuts, and the version released inside China carries a tidier ending than the international one.
