What Blind Shaft Is About
Two men make their living in the illegal coal mines of northern China like this: they present a stranger as a relative, take him underground, kill him there, then extract money from the mine owner to keep the accident quiet. When they pick their next victim, one of them starts to hesitate. Li Yang adapted Liu Qingbang's novella Sacred Wood, won a Silver Bear at Berlin in 2003, and was banned from directing for three years because the film went to a foreign festival. It never opened in China.
