What Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman Is About
Pierre Földes's 2022 animation combines six of Haruki Murakami's stories into a single narrative. It is set in Tokyo a few days after the 2011 earthquake; the wife of Komura, who works at a bank, leaves home after watching the news broadcasts, while his colleague Katagiri finds a giant frog in his flat asking for help to save the city from another quake. A missing cat forms a third strand. To carry the strangeness of Murakami's prose into animation the film records the faces of live actors and draws over them, producing an image slightly displaced and close to dreaming. The story explains nothing and the tales do not quite merge. It won a jury award at Annecy. Who it's for: readers of Murakami and viewers who like animation for adults. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a clear story; the film keeps its uncertainty.
