What Blood Done Sign My Name Is About
The film sets out from a real case: a black veteran of the Vietnam era is killed by a local white businessman, and the accused is later acquitted. The story turns on the part taken by a high school teacher afterwards and on the civil unrest that followed the acquittal. The account takes as its subject not only a killing but the response of the court and of the town. The film gives racism not as the attitude of a few people but as a working order. The acquittal is not the story’s resolution but its breaking point. The account follows events by turns through the eyes of two separate communities. Michael Rooker and Nate Parker appear in Jeb Stuart’s hundred and twenty eight minute American film, completed in 2010.
