What Blood, Sweat and Tears Is About
Andre Hazes was one of the most listened to popular singers the Netherlands has produced. The film tells his life in three stretches: the childhood in which he was spotted singing at an Amsterdam market in the sixties, the breakthrough in the eighties, and the last year of his life in the early 2000s. Everything between them is stages, drink, family, and a fame that got too heavy to carry. Diederick Koopal casts Martijn Fischer as Hazes, and Fischer sings the songs himself. The film neither absolves nor prosecutes him; the addiction and the damage he did to the people around him are both there. It was widely argued about and widely watched in the Netherlands. Even for someone who has never heard him, the shape is recognisable: a huge voice and a narrow life.
