Tim Maia

Tim Maia came out of the northern districts of Rio to become one of the most recognisable voices in Brazilian music. The film uses two actors: Robson Nunes plays him young, Babu Santana plays him later. Mauro Lima directs, from Nelson Motta's book Vale Tudo: O Som e a Fúria de Tim Maia. Alinne Moraes, Cauã Reymond and Valdineia Soriano are in the cast. It opened in Brazil on 30 October 2014. The strangest passage is not invented. As a young man Maia went to New York with no money and no English, stayed a while, ended up in jail and was deported. He came back as the man who brought soul music to Brazil. The second strange passage is also true. In the mid seventies he joined a belief group called Cultura Racional, started dressing in white, stopped taking drugs and delivered his label two albums nobody had asked for. Racional Volume 1 and 2 did not sell then. They are now among the most sought after records in Brazilian music. Who it is for: anyone interested in Brazilian music and the history of soul. Who it is not for: the film never breaks the standard biopic shape. Rise, fall, return, exactly where you expect them.
