Bluffmaster!

Rohan Sippy's 2005 Indian film is one of the works that brought the con comedy into the Bollywood mainstream. Roy, a professional grifter, is dumped by his girlfriend once she learns the truth about him; then, diagnosed with a fatal illness, he decides to do one right thing and helps an amateur con artist swindle the mobster who hurt his family. Experienced viewers will guess where the structure is going, but the film already treats that as part of the game. Abhishek Bachchan's performance sets the tempo and he works well opposite Riteish Deshmukh. Sippy's city photography and use of music represent the urban, westward-facing side of Bollywood at the time. Its weakness is that the emotional line stays pale beside the con plotting. Who it's for: viewers who like con films and the urban comedies of mid-2000s Bollywood. Who it's not for: anyone bothered by sensing the twist early, or who will measure the tightness of the plotting against Hollywood examples.
