What Bobby Is About
Fifty years after England lifted the World Cup, Ron Scalpello turned his camera on the captain who raised it. Bobby Moore was unhurried and elegant at the back, but his life away from the pitch was rougher: in 1970 he was held for four days in Bogota over a bracelet nobody ever found, and after a bowel cancer diagnosis in 1991 he died in February 1993 at fifty one. His two wives, his friends and his admirers do the telling, among them Pelé, Geoff Hurst, Harry Redknapp, Ray Winstone and Russell Brand. The film argues plainly that the game failed him while he was still alive.
