Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In

Alex Ferguson grew up in a working-class part of Glasgow, worked in the shipyards, served as a union representative, and became a footballer. Then he moved into management; he won a European trophy with Aberdeen and went to Manchester United in 1986. He stayed twenty-six years and rebuilt the club. In 2018 he suffered a brain haemorrhage and faced the risk of losing his speech. Jason Ferguson's documentary is about his father. The method of the narrative comes from that relation: during his recovery Ferguson tells his son what he remembers, and the camera records the conversation. The fear of losing his memory is the film's main frame. Éric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and Gordon Strachan also speak. Archive footage lays out the turning points of the career in order. Who it's for: Viewers who like football documentaries, Manchester United supporters, and sporting biographies. Who it's not for: Because it was made by his son there is no critical distance. The contested aspects of Ferguson are also barely discussed.
