Kelce

Jason Kelce is captain of the Philadelphia Eagles and one of the best centres in the league. Going into the 2022 season he is wrestling with one question: is it time to stop. The documentary follows that single season, but the subject is not the games. It is living with injury, four small children at home, what it means to play in the same league as his brother Travis, and what the retirement decision does to a family. Don Argott's film gets onto the field, but its best scenes are at home. Kelce does not perform for the camera or dress anything up; the painkillers, the sleep schedule and the daily state of a man who cannot decide are simply recorded. The Super Bowl at the end of that season, with the two brothers on opposing sides, hands the film an ending of its own. Who it's for: Followers of American football, and anyone who likes sports documentaries about end-of-career decisions and family. Who it's not for: The telling is admiring and keeps no critical distance. Some passages will also stay closed to viewers who do not follow the sport.
