What Believer Is About
Dan Reynolds, the singer of Imagine Dragons, was raised Mormon, served as a missionary in his youth and still holds his faith. The documentary follows the period in which he starts questioning how his church treats its LGBTQ members. With Tyler Glenn, the openly gay singer of Neon Trees, Reynolds sets up a festival called LoveLoud, the aim being not to win a side but to get both sides into the same space. The claim at the centre of the film is Reynolds' own: he argues that the church's stance produces shame in its young members and that this is connected to the rise in youth suicide in Utah. The rise in Utah is documented; specialists also say suicide cannot be traced to a single cause, and the film offers no scientific proof of the link. Don Argott does not argue for leaving the church, and Reynolds does not give up his faith. That is exactly what makes the argument a hard one.
