Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry

A documentary following a musician through her first album. The footage was shot between 2018 and 2020. Billie Eilish is sixteen at the time and the first album is not out yet. The most surprising thing the film shows is where the album was made: in a small bedroom in a house in Los Angeles. Her brother Finneas builds the tracks there; the two work with a microphone set beside the bed, and the album comes out of that room. The narrative gives the backstage as it is. Exhaustion on tour, health problems, the first large concerts, a driving test and tensions inside the family all sit in the same sequence. The camera does not leave the room in difficult moments. What the film is interested in is not success but what it means for a child. The parents are constantly involved, and the passages of schoolwork on the tour bus are among its strangest scenes. It runs over two and a half hours and went straight to a streaming service. R. J. Cutler directed. A comprehensive production for anyone who likes music documentary and close portraits. For a viewer expecting a critical view, the film stands close to the family and the artist and keeps no distance.
