What Bones of Crows Is About
The film tells the life of a Cree woman who survives a childhood inside Canada’s residential school system. In those schools Aline Spears meets hunger, racism and sexual abuse, and takes up the fight her family has carried across generations. Through her extraordinary ability to understand and translate codes she works in the Second World War in a special division of the Canadian air force as a code talker in her own language. The account is spread over a hundred years and gives what happened not as finished history but as a matter whose consequences continue. Grace Dove plays the lead in Marie Clements’s hundred and twenty two minute Canadian film, completed in 2023.
