What Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi Is About
Shlomi is sixteen and lives with his restless mother, his brother who is away doing military service and his ailing grandfather. He is counted a failure at school, but he cooks well and carries most of the work of the house. One day the head teacher realises the boy is in fact extraordinarily bright and tries to move him onto a different course; Shlomi would rather look after his family and the girl next door. The real question the film asks is what is lost when a child’s capacity is given up to what the household needs. Shemi Zarhin wrote and directed, with Oshri Cohen in the lead. It took twelve nominations at the Israeli Ophir awards.
