What Bottoms Is About
Emma Seligman's 2023 film follows two high-schoolers who start a fake fight club to prove themselves. The aim is to get close to the popular girls. The club actually grows. The film abandons realism from the start; the narrative exaggerates the conventions of teen comedy into parody. Rachel Sennott both leads and co-wrote the screenplay. The violence is deliberately absurd. The close is complete nonsense by design. Who it's for: those who like absurd teen comedy. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a realistic school story; the film refuses that on purpose.
